Marcia Smith, MA, LPC, CPCS
Job Title: Clinical Director
Credentials: MA, LPC, CPCS
Education Background: Marcia graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Georgia State University in 2002. She earned a Master of Arts in Professional Counseling from Argosy University in 2007.
Work History: In February 2008, Marcia began working as a Job Coach at MARR’s Right Side Up Program. In that role, she helped clients with things like interview skills and building a resume, while simultaneously working to build community relationships with local businesses where clients could obtain and maintain employment. Marcia then became an Intake Coordinator for RSU, where she completed assessments and admissions for clients, while also doing outreach to various GA DFCS offices, family treatment courts, and other community agencies to build partnerships and increase program referrals. Marcia transitioned into the role of Primary Counselor at Right Side Up Dekalb in 2011. She was promoted to Right Side Up Program Director in 2013. After 10 years of leading RSU, Marcia moved into her current role as MARR’s Clinical Director in November 2023. Prior to her career at MARR, Marcia worked for Clayton County School District as a paraprofessional in the special education department, helping children diagnosed with Austism Spectrum Disorder and other learning disabilities. She left her role as a paraprofessional when she began her graduate program internship at CAFE 458 in 2006.
“I truly believe God led me to the addiction treatment field. My initial plan in becoming a counselor was to work with school-aged children and their families, but my graduate program internship led me to working with homeless men and women dealing with addiction and mental health issues. I grew up with a father who struggled with addiction and PTSD, and the internship provided me with so much insight. Since working at MARR, I’ve been able to grow and increase my knowledge about addiction, mental health and trauma. I love having the opportunity to aid individuals in restoring themselves. The work we do is heartfelt and nurturing to others, and it also provides me with purpose. I believe in MARR’s mission of treating the whole person. We strive to help our clients mentally, physically, and spiritually, and bring a life of recovery to both the clients and their family members who are affected by this disease. In my new role, I look forward to being a part of the team that is helping move MARR forward and grow, while holding onto our history and maintaining our core values.”

Todd Valentine, LCSW
Job Title: Professionals Program Director
Credentials: LCSW
Education Background: Todd graduated from Duke University in 1990 with a bachelor’s degree in Economics. He earned his Master of Social Work from The University of Georgia in 2003.
Work History: Todd’s career at MARR began in 1998 in the Marketing and Fundraising Department. From a distance, Todd was able to witness miraculous transformations taking place in clients’ lives, and those experiences inspired Todd to return to graduate school for his degree in Social Work. Since that time, he’s held the role of Residential Manager, Primary Counselor, and most recently as the Director of MARR’s Professionals Program. Todd also has experience with young adults from his time working at Ridgeview Institute, and adolescents from his time at Inner Harbor Hospital.
“The MARR magic comes from a dedicated authentic staff creating a structure where the clients can feel safe enough to slowly but surely reveal their pain, anger, hurt and loss with one another. The gift of long-term residential treatment makes it almost impossible for our clients to stay in hiding. While the staff are able to offer excellent education on the disease of addiction, recovery, relapse prevention, trauma and family dynamics – all of these things are taken and put into practice over in their therapeutic communities. The real psychic change occurs through the relationships the clients build with one another at night and on the weekends when no staff are around, and they practice establishing boundaries, assertively expressing their needs and wants, and risk vulnerability and intimacy with their peers as they break through their denial and learn to share their fear, sadness, shame, anger and loss with one another.”

Ashley McQueen
Job Title: Men’s Recovery Center Part-Time Counselor
Work History: Ashley worked in a cabinet shop for 12 years before to moving to Atlanta and starting his own business remodeling kitchens and baths in 1991. Ashley came to MARR’s Men’s Recovery Center as a client in September 2005. He left MRC as a resident in June 2006, but continued to stay plugged into MARR’s alumni community, both by attending groups and volunteering. He was promoted to the role of Residential Manager in 2016. Ashley remained in that role full-time until the spring of 2022, when he stepped back to doing part-time counselor work.
“MARR saved my life. And I keep trying to pay MARR back, but I feel like the bill just keeps getting higher. I keep receiving more than I give, no matter how hard I try to give to other people. What I love most about this place is the people here, and their commitment to helping others change their lives.”

“When I was a client at MARR, I’ll never forget Doug asking me “can you accept grace?” and Ashley telling me to “be patient and trust the process.” I love MARR’s community-based therapy: being able to talk with others within the community on the patio, and listening to how their perspectives are starting to change while in treatment. I was told as a child that I could be a leader, but I never wanted that title. Working at MARR has allowed me to share some of my own experiences, give others hope and walk alongside them. And that is what leadership looks like to me.”

“MARR offers residents the opportunity to identify and begin to address the clinical issues that sustained their addictions while learning and practicing recovery principles in a Therapeutic Community setting. Our clients develop practices that sustain both sobriety and self-esteem as they engage in relationships based on trust and integrity. MARR’s off-site housing model offers clients an opportunity to apply the knowledge they acquire in both treatment groups and 12-step meetings in real world situations. As community members engage in group activities both on and off site, they learn to engage others’ perspectives, consider others’ needs in conjunction with their own, and thus make decisions supportive of continued recovery. As both a clinician and a person in recovery, I am grateful and honored to serve our population as Residential Manager, and to accompany Community members in their processes of growth, healing and development.”
